
Overview
Shōsenkyō is a gorge on the upper Ara River, north of the Kōfu Basin in Kōfu City, Yamanashi Prefecture. Designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty, it ranks among Japan's finest scenic spots and is counted as one of the country's five great gorges. Its formal name is Mitake-Shōsenkyō.

History
The gorge was designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty in 1923 (Taishō 12) and elevated to a Special Place of Scenic Beauty in 1953 (Shōwa 28). A representative scenic site of Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park, it is also listed among Japan's Twenty-Five Landscapes, the 100 Exquisite Waters of the Heisei Period, and Japan Heritage.

Best season
Autumn foliage coloring the gorge is especially fine. Fresh greenery and the clear streams of early summer also make for rewarding scenery.
