Overview

Mount Fuji is an active stratovolcano straddling Yamanashi and Shizuoka Prefectures, with a summit elevation of about 3,776 metres, making it the highest mountain in Japan. Its exceptionally symmetrical basaltic cone has long been regarded as a cultural icon of the country. It is counted among Japan's Three Holy Mountains, the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains, and the Top 100 Geological Sites in Japan.

Highlights

  • The symmetrical cone of Japan's highest peak, an independent mountain
  • A long history as a sacred mountain and object of Fuji worship
  • Its listing as a UNESCO World Heritage cultural site in 2013
  • Summer-season climbing that draws many hikers

History

Revered since ancient times as a sacred peak, the summit was believed to be the seat of the deity Asama and was held in reverence. Sengen shrines were established to pacify eruptions, giving rise to Asama worship. The mountain also became a training ground for Fuji ascetic practice, and pilgrim ascents developed, forming schools such as Murayama Shugen and the Fujikō. It was designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty in 1952 and a Historic Site in 2011, and on 22 June 2013 it was inscribed on the World Heritage List as "Fujisan, sacred place and source of artistic inspiration."

Access

The mountain spans the cities and villages of Yamanashi and Shizuoka Prefectures and lies about 100 kilometres southwest of Tokyo, from which it is visible on clear days.

Best season

Climbing is most active during the summer season. The summit area is covered in snow for about five months of the year.
