Overview

Mount Amagoi rises to 2,037 meters in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, and is counted among the 100 Famous Mountains of Yamanashi. It stands on a spur ridge that branches north from the main ridgeline running between Mount Kaikoma and Mount Nokogiri in the Akaishi Mountains (Southern Alps). From near its summit hikers can take in Mount Kaikoma, the Hoo Sanzan peaks, and Mount Fuji. Its name is said to come from old rainmaking rites once held in the area, and it suits those who enjoy quiet ridge walking in the northern Southern Alps.

Highlights

  • A 2,037-meter peak in the northern Southern Alps, one of Yamanashi's 100 Famous Mountains
  • Sweeping views of Mount Kaikoma, the Hoo Sanzan, and Mount Fuji from near the top
  • A distinctive spur ridge branching north from the Kaikoma to Nokogiri ridgeline
  • A name rooted in old rainmaking prayers, giving the mountain a sense of history

History

The name Amagoi is linked to the old custom of praying for rain during droughts. In an era when mountain life and farming were closely bound, water was the lifeline of agriculture, and a peak that became a site of such prayers came to carry the name. It quietly reflects the long relationship between local people and the natural world. For detailed accounts of the origin and any related folk beliefs, please refer to official sources and regional records.

Access

The mountain lies near 35.83 degrees north and 138.24 degrees east, on the Southern Alps side of Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture. Access is generally from the Suyama or Nagasaka interchange of the Chuo Expressway into Hokuto City, then on toward the trailhead. As this is a serious peak above 2,000 meters, always confirm the latest trailhead, forest road, and parking details through official information for the area.

Best season

The most comfortable time is from early summer, once lingering snow has settled and the ridgeline views clear, through autumn, when crisp air reveals Mount Kaikoma and Mount Fuji sharply. Because the summit exceeds 2,037 meters, prepare for cold mornings and sudden weather changes. Winter ascents require proper experience and equipment.
