Highlights
- ●A clear stream rising on the northern foot of Mt. Fuji
- ●A Class 1 river within the Sagami River system
- ●The contrast of a 1.85 km designation and a nearly 10 km bed
- ●An accessible waterside near central Fujiyoshida
History
Although the Kandabori is classified as a Class 1 river in the Sagami River system, only about 1.85 kilometers of its course carries that official designation. In reality the riverbed runs for nearly 10 kilometers, a striking gap between the designated section and the natural length of the flow. Its waters, drawn from the north side of Mt. Fuji, have long accompanied life in the Yoshida district.
Access
The river runs near latitude 35.49, longitude 138.80, close to the urban area of Fujiyoshida. It is easy to reach on foot or by car from around Mt. Fuji Station on the Fujikyuko Line, and pairs well with Mt. Fuji sightseeing or a bowl of the local Yoshida udon. For exact riverside paths and parking, please check the official Fujiyoshida information.
Best season
Spring to early summer, when snowmelt from Mt. Fuji comes to mind, and the clear air of late autumn are both recommended. In summer the waterside brings cool relief from the town's heat, while winter frames the stream against a snow-capped Mt. Fuji.
