Overview
The Midai River is a first-class river of the Fuji River system, flowing through the western part of the Kofu Basin in Yamanashi Prefecture. It runs 18.8 km in total length with a steep channel gradient of 2.7 percent. Descending from the mountains into the basin, its course has long been bound up with local life.

History
Its name is said to derive from 'Mizude-gawa' (river of flooding waters) and from an ancient episode in which, after a flood, the Kai provincial governor petitioned the court and an imperial envoy (chokushi) was sent down. According to the 'Kai no Kunishi', it was also called 'Midei' in early modern times, a name still used locally today.
