Overview

Hirose Dam is a rockfill dam standing 75 meters high with a crest length of 255 meters, built across the Fuefuki River in the Fujikawa river system in Yamanashi City, Yamanashi Prefecture. Managed by the prefecture, it is a multipurpose dam serving flood control, irrigation, water supply, and power generation. The reservoir set among green mountains and the massive stone-piled embankment create a quiet landscape typical of the upper Fuefuki valley.

Highlights

  • An imposing rockfill embankment 75 meters tall
  • Quiet reservoir views in the upper Fuefuki valley
  • A multipurpose dam covering flood control to power
  • Mountain scenery mirrored on the reservoir surface

History

Construction began in 1965 and was completed in 1974. The dam has a catchment area of about 76.6 square kilometers, impounds roughly 55 hectares of water at full pool, and can store about 14.3 million cubic meters. Built to protect downstream communities from flooding and to secure water resources, it has long supported the daily life and farmland of the Fuefuki basin.

Access

The dam lies in the upper reaches of the Fuefuki River in Yamanashi City, near 35.84 degrees north and 138.76 degrees east. It sits along a road leading from the city into the mountains, and because public transport is limited, most visitors arrive by car. Access and road conditions vary by season, so please check official information before visiting.

Best season

Early summer with fresh greenery and autumn with colored foliage are especially beautiful, offering a fine contrast between the mountainsides and the water surface. The elevation is high and winters are cold, so watch for snow and ice.
