Overview

The Miya River is a short stream flowing through Fujiyoshida on the northern foothills of Mount Fuji in Yamanashi Prefecture. Fed by snowmelt and spring water from Mount Fuji, it descends from the mountainside into the Yoshida basin before joining the Sagami River (Katsura River) system. Rather than a grand tourist site, it is a modest local waterway woven into daily life, where you may glimpse Mount Fuji across the water and feel like pausing on a quiet walk.

Highlights

  • Views of Mount Fuji across the flowing water
  • A clear stream descending Mount Fuji's foothills
  • A walking path where the town and nature blend
  • A humble waterway rich in Fuji spring-water culture

History

The Miya River runs over terrain shaped by Mount Fuji's volcanic activity, and its course carries the water history of the mountain's northern base. For generations the Yoshida community relied on Fuji's spring water, and this river served as a familiar source for daily and agricultural use. In modern times a section was designated as a first-class river, and it continues to be managed as a link between flood control and local living. For detailed history, please refer to official sources.

Access

The river lies close to central Fujiyoshida and can be reached on foot or by car from stations on the Fujikyuko Line. Flowing across the Yoshida basin on Mount Fuji's northern side, it offers several riverside spots to approach the water. Because the best viewpoints vary with season and water level, check official information or a map before visiting.

Best season

Spring to early summer, when snowmelt swells the stream, and autumn to winter, when clear air makes Mount Fuji stand out sharply, are especially beautiful. Winter offers a striking contrast between the water and the snow-capped peak, but watch for icy paths.
