Overview
Mount Okusenjō rises to 2,409.4 meters in the city of Yamanashi, forming one peak along the main ridge of the Okuchichibu mountains. Rather than a bold, standalone summit, it is more of a gentle bump on the ridgeline leading toward Mount Kokushi, so subtle that without a marker you might walk past it. Its top is cloaked in coniferous forest, offering little in the way of a view but a strong sense of the deep, primeval woodland of Okuchichibu.

History
The Okuchichibu range that includes Mount Okusenjō has long been associated with mountain worship and revered for its deep forests and moss-covered rocks. Together with peaks such as Mount Kokushi and Kitaokusenjō, it helps form the main ridge of Okuchichibu, a section familiar to those who traverse the range. Okusenjō itself is remembered less for dramatic legend than as a quiet peak wrapped in old-growth forest.
Access
The usual approach is by car to the Shirabedaira area, from which climbers ascend toward Mount Kokushi (2,591 m), passing Okusenjō along the way. It lies deep in the mountains of Yamanashi city, near 35.85°N, 138.67°E. Private vehicle access is the norm and public transport is limited, so please confirm current forest-road and trail conditions through official sources before setting out.
Best season
Early summer, when snow has melted and fresh greenery returns, through autumn, when the air clears and the woods take on color, are the most comfortable times to walk here. The Okuchichibu ridge above 2,400 meters stays cool even in summer, while winter brings snow and severe cold that greatly raise the difficulty. Always check seasonal gear needs and weather in advance.

Did you know?
💡 Even standing on the summit, the surrounding trees block almost all views, and the top is little more than a slight rise on the ridge, easy to pass unnoticed if you miss the sign. That very lack of spectacle is Okusenjō's character: a mountain to be savored for the depth of its forest along the way rather than the panorama at the top.
