Overview

Mount Mibu (Mibudake) is a 2,999-meter peak in the Akaishi Range (Southern Alps). A forward peak of the famous Ainodake, it marks the boundary point of three prefectures — Yamanashi, Nagano, and Shizuoka — and at the same time forms a watershed dividing three river systems: the Fuji, the Tenryu, and the Oi. Counted among the 「Hundred Mountains of Kai」, it is a key peak for grand ridge walks.

Highlights

  • A special peak standing at the meeting of three prefectures
  • A watershed dividing the Fuji, Tenryu, and Oi rivers
  • Its position on the Senen Ridge from Senjogatake to Shiomidake
  • The quirk of 2,999 m, just one meter short of 3,000

History

Today, partly due to the spread of the internet, climbers commonly call it 「Mibudake」, but the original and correct reading is said to be 「Mitsumine-dake」. Locally it is also known as Mikunizan (Mountain of Three Provinces), and it is said to be a mistake to call it 「Mibu-dake」 after the Mibu River. Its special position on the border of three prefectures and three watersheds lends depth to the mountain's name and lore.

Access

Located at 35.644°N, 138.218°E, the peak lies on the boundary of Minami-Alps City, Ina City, and Aoi Ward of Shizuoka City. It stands on the long 「Senen Ridge」 running from Senjogatake to Shiomidake; a spur ridge extending east links it to Ainodake and on toward Kitadake and Notoridake of the Shirane Sanzan. This is serious mountain terrain, so check official information on trails, huts, and weather, and go prepared with full equipment and planning.

Best season

Summer to early autumn, the prime season for high-mountain climbing, is recommended, offering ridgeline views and alpine flora. Because of the harsh environment at nearly 3,000 meters, be very careful of sudden weather changes, lingering snow, and winter snowpack. Even in the snow-free season, prepare fully for cold and plan conservatively.

Suggested itinerary

  1. 1Aim for Mount Mibu via the Senen Ridge traverse route
  2. 2Stand at the summit where three prefectures and three watersheds meet
  3. 3Extend toward Ainodake by way of the spur ridge
  4. 4Enjoy views of the Shirane Sanzan and descend as planned

Did you know?

💡 At 2,999 meters, the summit falls just one meter short of 3,000. That narrow miss of the milestone makes it all the more memorable to climbers. It is also a geographically striking single point where the Fuji, Tenryu, and Oi river systems part ways.
