History
The island was originally called Funa-jima, but it rose to fame in the early Edo period when Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro fought their duel here. At the time the area belonged to the Kokura domain of Buzen, and because Sasaki Kojiro used the name Ganryu, the dueling ground later came to be known as Ganryu-jima. Their contest is still recounted as one of the most iconic bouts in the history of Japanese martial arts.
Access
The island lies in the Kanmon Strait off Hikoshima in Shimonoseki, at roughly latitude 33.93 and longitude 130.93. The usual way to reach it is by ferry from Shimonoseki Harbor. Because sailing frequency, boarding points and timetables vary with season and weather, checking official information before your trip is recommended.
Best season
Spring and autumn, with their pleasant sea breezes and comfortable walking conditions, are well suited to a visit. The strait looks its finest on clear days, when both Honshu and Kyushu can be seen across the water.
