Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum of Art
A art museum in Yamaguchi — fine collections and architecture.
Overview
The Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum of Art stands in Kameyama-cho, Yamaguchi City, and is the prefecture's principal public art gallery. Since opening in 1979, it has presented a rotating display drawn from its permanent collection alongside a varied program of special exhibitions. It is especially strong in photography, known for shows that introduce postwar Japanese photographic expression, including works by Katsuji Fukuda, a photographer connected to Yamaguchi. Designed by architect Azusa Kito, the building earned the BCS Prize for its distinguished design. Set within the calm streets of the former castle town of Yamaguchi, it is a cultural hub for unhurried encounters with art.

History
The museum opened on October 7, 1979. It was designed by the architect Azusa Kito, and the building received the BCS Prize. Since opening it has shown part of its collection in permanent displays while hosting many special exhibitions gathering fine works from Japan and abroad. In photography it has a notable record: between 1989 and 1991 it held exhibitions surveying photographers of the periods 1965–75, 1945–55 and 1955–65, reflecting a sustained commitment to postwar photography.
Access
The museum is located at Kameyama-cho 3-1, Yamaguchi City, at roughly latitude 34.1795 and longitude 131.474. Set in central Yamaguchi City among the prefectural capital's cluster of cultural facilities, it is easy to reach. Best season
Because the displays are indoors, the museum is comfortable to enjoy year-round, though timing a visit to a special exhibition adds much to see. Spring and autumn, when strolling the surrounding streets is pleasant, are ideal for combining art viewing with a walk around Yamaguchi.
