Overview

Michi-no-Eki Shiosai-ichiba Hofu is a roadside station in Hofu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, standing right beside Mitajiri Port on the Seto Inland Sea. As its name Shiosai-ichiba (Tide-Color Market) suggests, the facility is built around a lively fish market where the day's fresh catch is lined up for sale. It also serves as the flagship facility of Minato Oasis Mitajiri, which encompasses the surrounding port area. A relaxed stop for shopping, seaside meals and a taste of harbor-town life, it is loved by locals and travelers alike.

Highlights

  • A lively fish market lined with the freshly landed catch
  • A waterfront location right beside Mitajiri Port
  • Harbor-town charm as the flagship of Minato Oasis Mitajiri
  • Dining and shopping featuring the bounty of the Seto Inland Sea

History

The station was established on April 15, 2015 and opened to the public on October 10 the same year. Built beside Mitajiri Port, Hofu's historic gateway to the sea, it plays a central role in the Minato Oasis Mitajiri initiative that makes the most of the port district and its fishing industry. Though a relatively new roadside station, its distinctive focus on a fresh-fish market has made it a firmly established seaside stop along the Seto Inland Sea.

Access

The station sits next to Mitajiri Port in Hofu City, at roughly latitude 34.03786 and longitude 131.59722. It is easy to reach by car from the coastal town area. For public-transport routes, current opening hours and parking availability, please check the official information.

Best season

For seafood lovers, autumn through winter is especially rewarding, when many fish are at their richest. The Seto Inland Sea enjoys a mild climate year-round, so springtime and summer strolls along the shore are pleasant too. Because the seasonal catch changes throughout the year, each visit can bring a different flavor of the sea.

Did you know?

💡 The name Shiosai plays on the rise and fall of the tide and the colors of the sea, neatly expressing the character of a market nurtured by the Seto Inland Sea. Mitajiri Port was long a key harbor supporting Hofu's maritime trade, and standing beside it gives this roadside station its distinctly seaside atmosphere.
