Overview

Michi-no-Eki Kaminoseki-kaikyo is a roadside station in Murotsu, Kaminoseki Town, Yamaguchi Prefecture, standing along Yamaguchi Prefectural Route 23 (Hikari-Kaminoseki Line). As its name suggests, its greatest draw is a location overlooking the Kaminoseki Strait, where you can rest while watching boats pass through the channel and gaze at the islands across the water. Kaminoseki has long been a port town at a key point of the Seto Inland Sea route, and the rich fishing grounds created by its tidal currents bring distinctive local seafood. It is a peaceful seaside stop to enjoy quiet strait views and the calm rhythm of harbor-town life.

Highlights

  • A waterfront setting overlooking the Kaminoseki Strait and its passing boats
  • The classic Seto Inland Sea beauty of islands lining the far shore
  • Local seafood nurtured by the strait's tidal currents
  • An easy stop along Prefectural Route 23 during a drive

History

The station was established on April 4, 2014 and opened on November 21 the same year. Built in the Murotsu district facing the Kaminoseki Strait, along Prefectural Route 23 (Hikari-Kaminoseki Line), it serves as a hub for tourism and regional development in Kaminoseki Town. Making the most of its fine location overlooking the strait, it has become a favored stop on journeys along the Seto Inland Sea shore.

Access

The station lies in Murotsu, Kaminoseki Town, along Prefectural Route 23 (Hikari-Kaminoseki Line), at roughly latitude 33.83453 and longitude 132.11678. Best season

The calm strait scenery can be enjoyed year-round, but autumn and winter, when the air is clear and even the distant island silhouettes stand out sharply, offer especially fine views. Pleasant spring days and breezy summer visits are also recommended, as the strait's changing seasonal moods color the memory of the trip.

Did you know?

💡 The place name Kaminoseki is said to derive from the seki (barrier or checkpoint) of the Seto Inland Sea route, hinting at its past as a maritime chokepoint watching over passing ships. From this roadside station in the port town of Murotsu, that historic strait scenery can still be viewed up close.
