Overview

Akiyoshidai is Japan’s largest karst plateau, spreading across the central and eastern parts of Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Limestone pinnacles dot a plateau standing 180–420 m above sea level, its surface covering about 54 square kilometers. Ranked alongside Hiraodai in Fukuoka and the Shikoku Karst of Kochi and Ehime as one of Japan’s three great karsts, it is a premier natural site designated a Special Natural Monument.

Highlights

  • The grand scenery of limestone and grassland formed by Japan’s largest karst plateau
  • A rare landform counted among Japan’s three great karsts
  • A natural heritage designated a Natural Monument and Special Natural Monument
  • A scenic site selected for both the “100 Landscapes of Heisei” and the “Top 100 Geological Sites in Japan”

History

Akiyoshidai is a precious karst landform designated both a Natural Monument and a Special Natural Monument of Japan, and it was chosen among the “100 Landscapes of Heisei.” Known too as part of the “Top 100 Geological Sites in Japan,” it is a region of great geological importance. The Kotogawa River divides it into two plateaus, the East Plateau and West Plateau, with the eastern side forming Akiyoshidai in the narrow sense (a Special Natural Monument and quasi-national park).

Access

The site lies in Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture (around 34.24°N, 131.30°E), inland in the Chugoku region, so access is primarily by car. As one of Japan’s three great karsts, it spans a vast area with several starting points such as observation decks and walking trails. Please check official information for detailed transport and parking.

Best season

From the fresh greenery of early summer, the grand contrast of white limestone against green grassland is a highlight. In autumn the grassland turns golden, and this dramatic seasonal change is part of Akiyoshidai’s appeal. As weather and viewing conditions may vary, confirm details with official sources before visiting.
