Overview

Roadside Station Kitaura-kaido Hohoku lies along National Route 191 in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Set in the northern Hohoku area of Shimonoseki near the Sea of Japan (Hibiki-nada), at the westernmost tip of Honshu, it is a much-loved base for drives along the coastal Route 191. In contrast to Roadside Station Sorene Shunan on the inland Route 2 lowlands within the same prefecture, this station's defining character is its open, seaside location on the old Kitaura Road.

Highlights

  • A seaside setting in Hohoku near the Sea of Japan (Hibiki-nada)
  • A driving rest base on the coastal National Route 191
  • The story of the land in the old highway name Kitaura-kaido
  • The open atmosphere of northern Shimonoseki at Honshu's western tip

History

Registered as a roadside station on August 25, 2011, it opened on March 24, 2012. Developed as a rest and exchange hub on National Route 191 linking the Hohoku area of northern Shimonoseki, it has served to bring the region's coastal resources to travelers. The name Kitaura-kaido, drawn from the old highway, keeps alive the memory of this land's historic travel route.

Access

The station stands along National Route 191 in Shimonoseki City, near 34.31 degrees north and 130.89 degrees east, in the coastal Hohoku area reached by heading north from central Shimonoseki toward the Sea of Japan side. It is convenient to visit by car on Route 191 and pairs naturally with a coastline drive. Check opening hours and other details through official sources before visiting.

Best season

Spring and summer, when sea views are at their most pleasant, and clear days of crisp air are especially recommended. The seascapes unique to the Hohoku area facing Hibiki-nada shine all the more in fine weather. As sea conditions on the Sea of Japan side vary with season and weather, choose a calm day to enjoy the coastal drive.

Did you know?

💡 Kitaura-kaido refers to the Sea of Japan coastal region of northern Shimonoseki, a name carried on in this station. Whereas Roadside Station Sorene Shunan, set inland along Route 2, is a trunk-road hub on the Seto Inland Sea side, this one is a driving base on the Sea of Japan (Hibiki-nada) in Hohoku, a contrast in setting that speaks to the east-west variety of Yamaguchi.
