Overview

Iota Port is a regional harbor in the Iota area of Suō-ōshima Town, Ōshima District, Yamaguchi Prefecture, managed by the prefecture. It sits at the eastern tip of Yashiro Island (Suō-ōshima) and indeed at the easternmost edge of Yamaguchi, and has long been maintained as a hub of maritime traffic. Today ferries linking Yanai Port in Yamaguchi with Matsuyama's Mitsuhama Port in Ehime call here, connecting the mainland side, Shikoku, and Suō-ōshima by sea. It makes an easy gateway to fold into an Inland Sea island journey or a Honshu-to-Shikoku ferry trip.

Highlights

  • A port at the eastern tip of Yashiro Island and Yamaguchi's easternmost edge
  • A call point for ferries linking Yanai and Matsuyama's Mitsuhama Port
  • Town-run service to the island of Nasakejima, five round trips daily
  • The Yamaguchi-side start of Route 437's over-the-sea section

History

Iota Port lies at the eastern tip of Yashiro Island (Suō-ōshima) and has long been developed as a hub of sea traffic. It is managed by Yamaguchi Prefecture and classified as a regional harbor. High-speed boats once linking Iwakuni Port in Yamaguchi with Matsuyama's Mitsuhama Port used to call at Iota, but that route has since been discontinued altogether. Though the services calling here have shifted over time, its role of connecting Suō-ōshima with the mainland and Shikoku carries on today.

Access

The port is located in Iota, Suō-ōshima Town, at roughly 33.94 degrees north and 132.44 degrees east. National Route 437, which crosses Suō-ōshima, has a sea section between Matsuyama Port and Iota Port, making Iota effectively the starting point of the route's Yamaguchi segment. Beyond the ferry linking Yanai Port and Matsuyama's Mitsuhama Port, a town-run service to the outlying island of Nasakejima departs five round trips a day. Schedules and fares can change, so please confirm through official sources.

Best season

The Seto Inland Sea stays relatively calm through the year, and for ferries and island-hopping the stable weather of spring into early summer and autumn is especially comfortable. Summer voyages across the glittering sea are popular too, though sailings may be affected by weather. When using ferry times or the outlying-island route, check operating information in advance through official sources for peace of mind.

Did you know?

💡 Iota Port is not only the easternmost harbor of Yamaguchi but also the effective starting point, on the Yamaguchi side, of National Route 437's sea section across Suō-ōshima. It forms part of the unusual arrangement in which a national highway continues over the water, and a glance at the map reveals the ingenuity of the sea route linking Honshu and Shikoku.
