Overview

The Port of Kanmon is a collective name for the Port of Shimonoseki on the Honshu side (Shimonoseki City), the Port of Kitakyushu on the Kyushu side (Kitakyushu City), and the Kanmon fairway that runs between them. Set on the Kanmon Strait dividing Honshu and Kyushu, the two cities' harbors and the shipping channel are bound together as a single port. Under the Act on Port Regulations, the waters encompassing both ports and the fairway are formally designated the special port of Kanmon, while each port also plays an important role as an international strategic port. The sight of ships and bridges crossing the strait is a dynamic scene unique to this place.

Highlights

  • A broad port collectively naming Shimonoseki, Kitakyushu, and the Kanmon fairway
  • The Kanmon Strait waters designated a single special port under port-regulation law
  • A strategic setting where Honshu and Kyushu face off across the strait
  • Dynamic views of ships crossing the strait and the bridges linking Kanmon

History

The Port of Kanmon is defined as a collective designation for the Port of Kitakyushu, the Port of Shimonoseki, and the Kanmon fairway connecting them. Under the Act on Port Regulations, the sea area embracing both ports and the fairway is formally designated as the special port of Kanmon; yet the port authorities are separate, the Kitakyushu City Port and Airport Bureau and the Shimonoseki City Port Bureau, with the fairway under direct national management. Under the Port and Harbor Act, each port's harbor zone is treated as a distinct international strategic port, making Kanmon a distinctive port spanning both Honshu and Kyushu.

Access

The waters of the Port of Kanmon spread roughly around latitude 33.881 N, longitude 130.989 E, in the Kanmon Strait between Shimonoseki City and Kitakyushu City. You can reach the strait shore from the central areas of both the Shimonoseki and Kitakyushu sides, where viewpoints of ships and bridges are dotted about. For tours of port facilities or boarding vessels, availability and procedures differ, so confirm through official information.

Best season

Views over the strait can be enjoyed year-round, but spring and autumn, with their pleasant sea breezes, suit a waterside stroll. The scene of ships crossing the strait and the bridges linking Kanmon looks especially striking on clear days. Since the view changes with weather and tidal conditions, check official information and on-site guidance when you visit.

Did you know?

💡 A key feature is that Kanmon is not a single port but a collective name grouping together the Port of Shimonoseki, the Port of Kitakyushu, and the Kanmon fairway. While treated as one unified special port under the Act on Port Regulations, its management is split between the Honshu and Kyushu sides, with the fairway directly administered by the state, an unusual administrative arrangement. It is a strategic point where two cities, two prefectures, and Honshu and Kyushu face each other across the strait.
