Overview

Roadside Station Kikugawa stands along National Route 491 in the Kikugawa area of Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Although Shimonoseki is famous for the sea, this station sits inland amid rice paddies and gentle wooded hills, offering a quiet, practical place to pause during a long drive and browse produce grown by local farmers.

Highlights

  • An easy-to-find location right along National Route 491, ideal for a driving break
  • Rice-paddy scenery of the Kikugawa district, deep in the inland side of coastal Shimonoseki
  • A modest, everyday atmosphere where you can encounter local farm produce
  • The settled character of a station open since 1996, among the prefecture's older ones

History

The station opened on August 5, 1996, making it one of the earlier roadside stations developed in Yamaguchi Prefecture. It has long served travelers on Route 491 and residents of the former town of Kikugawa, later merged into Shimonoseki, functioning as a gateway to this inland district for well over a quarter of a century.

Access

Located at 34.12611 degrees north and 131.03164 degrees east, the station lies directly along National Route 491. From central Shimonoseki, follow the route inland; arriving by car is the natural choice. Public transport is limited, so check timetables in advance. Please confirm parking details and opening hours through official sources.

Best season

Because Kikugawa is a rice-growing inland district, the surrounding fields look their best in early summer, when the paddies turn vivid green, and in autumn, at harvest time. If the produce stand is your goal, the harvest months bring the widest local selection. Confirm seasonal stock through official information.
