The zoo grounds were formerly the site of the residence of the Mori clan, lords of the Tokuyama domain, and historic remains related to the Mori clan remain within the park. It opened on March 20, 1960, as the Tokuyama Municipal Zoo, marking the 25th anniversary of the former city of Tokuyama's incorporation.
