Overview
Sumiyoshi Shrine is a Shinto shrine in the Ichinomiya Sumiyoshi neighborhood of Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture. A Shikinaisha (Myojin Taisha), it is the ichinomiya of former Nagato Province, was formerly ranked as a Kanpei-chusha, and is now a Beppyo shrine of the Association of Shinto Shrines. Together with Sumiyoshi-taisha in Osaka and Sumiyoshi Shrine in Fukuoka, it is counted among the "Three Great Sumiyoshi" shrines.

History
A Shikinaisha (Myojin Taisha), it serves as the ichinomiya of former Nagato Province. Formerly ranked as a Kanpei-chusha, it is today a Beppyo shrine of the Association of Shinto Shrines. Along with Sumiyoshi-taisha in Osaka and the Sumiyoshi Shrine in Fukuoka, it is counted among the "Three Great Sumiyoshi" shrines, and its main hall is designated a National Treasure. Whereas the Osaka Sumiyoshi-taisha enshrines the nigi-mitama, or placid spirit, of the kami, the Shimonoseki shrine enshrines the ara-mitama, or rough spirit.
