History
The name Yashirojima derives from the island once being a large island belonging to the old Suo Province, and it has long been widely known by its popular name, Suo Oshima. As a strategic point of maritime traffic in the Seto Inland Sea and an island with a history of emigration and shipping, it has nurtured a distinctive culture of its own. For detailed history and historic sites, a visit to the island's museums or a look at official information will deepen your understanding.
Access
The gateway to the island is connected to the Honshu mainland by the Oshima Bridge, which can be crossed by car. If you travel by rail, the area around Obatake Station on the Honshu side serves as a starting point, from where you cross the bridge onto the island. Since the island is large, getting around by rental car or private vehicle is convenient. Please check official sources for the latest timetables and bridge information.
Best season
Blessed with a mild Seto Inland Sea climate, summer is especially popular for sea bathing and marine leisure. In autumn, when the tangerines ripen, picking the island's specialty citrus is a delight, and a stroll in early spring gazing over the calm sea is equally pleasant. The views from the mountainous terrain rising to 691 meters change their expression with each season.
