History
Muroya-no-sono opens a Yanai merchant house to the public as a museum. From the Edo period onward, Yanai flourished as a town of Seto Inland Sea commerce, and grand townhouses of oil dealers and merchants remain to this day. Muroya-no-sono carries that merchant culture into the present; details of the building and its collection can be checked through on-site displays or official information.
Access
Located in Yanai City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The simplest route is on foot from JR Sanyo Main Line’s Yanai Station toward the white-walled district, letting you explore the museum together with the surrounding historic streets. Best season
To pair it with a walk through the white-walled townscape, the mild climate of spring and autumn is most comfortable. In summer, Yanai’s signature goldfish lanterns brighten the town, and festival seasons bring extra bustle. As the exhibits are largely indoors, rainy days are no obstacle.
