History
In 1955 the island was designated a remote-island development area, and life here has long centered on fishing. There is no airport, so the connection to the mainland has always been by ferry, serving a quiet community of roughly 250 people.
Access
The island is part of the city of Sakata and has no airport, so the usual way to reach it is by ferry from Sakata Port. For sailing times and schedules, please check a map and official information.
Best season
Spring through summer, when the sea is generally calmer and better suited to sightseeing, is the recommended time to visit. This is also the peak of the seasonal tourism the mild climate supports.
