History
In the Muromachi period the Kannon-pilgrimage faith that had flourished in western Japan spread eastward, and it was in this current that Jakusho-ji came to be designated the first temple of the Mogami Sanjusan Kannon pilgrimage. Renowned enough for its blessings of good matches to be paired as 「Izumo in the west, Wakamatsu in the east,」 it has gathered popular devotion throughout its long history. For the detailed story of its founding, please check the official information.
Access
The temple lies in the city of Tendo (around 38.3 degrees north, 140.4 degrees east). It stands on the hillside above the town of Tendo, known for its shogi pieces and hot springs, and a car is convenient for a visit. It is reassuring to confirm public-transport routes, parking, and opening hours in the official information before you go.
Best season
A steady stream of visitors comes year-round to pray for good matches, but the temple grounds are at their finest in the fresh green of early summer and the coloured foliage of autumn. As Tendo is also a hot-spring town, a visit can be enjoyed together with a soak in any season.
