Overview
Zaosan Shrine stands on the summit of Kumano-dake, the highest peak of the Zao range at 1,841 meters, in Yamagata City. Its enshrined deity is Susanoo-no-mikoto. Together with Ryuzan overlooking Zao Onsen and Sukawa Shrine within the hot-spring town, it forms a set of three shrines under one grand shrine, a venerable center of mountain worship whose sweeping summit panorama is a special goal for climbers.

History
Shrine tradition places its founding in 708 (the first year of the Wado era), and it has long been bound to the mountain faith that reveres the Zao peaks. Forming the three-shrines-one-grand-shrine grouping alongside Ryuzan at the foot and Sukawa Shrine at Zao Onsen, it has served as a core of local worship. For a detailed history, please check official sources.
Access
The shrine sits atop Kumano-dake in the Zao range, in the Kamitakarazawa area of Yamagata City (roughly 38.14N, 140.44E). Visiting means a mountain climb; the usual route ascends on foot from Zao Onsen or the ropeway side toward the summit. Watch for sudden weather changes and lingering snow, and confirm gear and up-to-date trail information through official sources.
Best season
Early summer through autumn, when the trails are stable, is the easier season to visit: summer brings alpine flora and autumn paints the slopes in color. Winter's snow and severe cold make the climb difficult. Summit weather shifts quickly, so come well prepared in any season.
