Overview

Mizukubo Dam is a rockfill dam standing 62 meters high and 205 meters long, built on the Kariyasu River of the Mogami River system in Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture. It serves as a multipurpose dam that supplies irrigation water to the Yonezawa Plain, drinking water to Yonezawa and other areas, and industrial water. The reservoir it created was named Hojo-no-Mizuumi (the Lake of Abundance).

History

The dam was planned as an irrigation facility by the Tohoku Regional Agricultural Administration Office of the former Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, and was completed in 1975. It is now managed under contract by the Yonezawa Plain Land Improvement District. In addition to supplying irrigation water to the Yonezawa Plain, it took on the roles of drinking-water and industrial-water supply, operating as a multipurpose dam.

Access

The dam is located in Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture, in the mountains along the upper Kariyasu River.

Best season

The period from early summer, when the surrounding greenery deepens, through autumn, when the lake surface and foliage come into harmony, is calm and pleasant.
