Overview
The Homma Museum of Art is a registered museum in Sakata, Yamagata Prefecture. It preserves and displays works collected by the Homma family, once major landowners of the Shonai region, while also serving as a garden museum centered on the purely Japanese-style building Seienkaku and the garden Kakubu-en. It is operated by the Homma Museum of Art foundation.

History
The museum opened in May 1947 and is regarded as Japan's first private museum of the postwar period. Its first director was Junji Homma, a scholar of Japanese swords. Built around the collection of the Homma family, major landowners of the Shonai region, it is cherished as a comprehensive cultural facility encompassing architecture and gardens. Its detached-villa garden, Kakubu-en, is designated a Place of Scenic Beauty.
