Overview
Sagae Dam is a 112-meter-high rockfill dam built on the Sagae River, part of the Mogami River system, in Nishikawa, Yamagata Prefecture. Managed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, it serves flood control, water supply, and hydroelectric power generation. It is the largest dam in Yamagata Prefecture.

History
Construction began in 1972 and was completed in 1990. Built as a national multipurpose dam under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, it was developed for flood control of the Sagae and Mogami rivers, water supply to the Murayama region, and hydroelectric power. It is managed comprehensively together with Shirakawa Dam.
Access
The dam is located in Nishikawa, Nishimurayama District, Yamagata Prefecture, reached via the surrounding roads.
Best season
The scenery of the man-made reservoir set among the mountains is especially rewarding during the fresh green of early summer and the autumn foliage season.
