History
Domori Zenko-ji belongs to the Buzan school of Shingon Buddhism and enshrines a Zenko-ji-style Amida triad, a form that follows the tradition of the famous Zenko-ji in Nagano, which is why it has long been affectionately called Dewa Zenko-ji. The temple is closely linked to Maeda Toshimasu (Keiji), who is said to have spent his later years in Yonezawa; a memorial stupa raised in his honor still conveys the presence of this bold warrior.
Access
The temple lies in Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, near 37.90 degrees north and 140.15 degrees east, in the Domori area on the eastern side of the city. Yonezawa is known as the castle town of the Uesugi clan, so the temple pairs well with sightseeing around the city. As access details and viewing hours may change, please confirm current information on official sources before visiting.
Best season
The calm atmosphere of the grounds is especially appealing during the fresh growth of spring and the autumn foliage. Yonezawa is a snowy region, so winter calls for preparation against the cold and snow. Timing a visit to coincide with events connected to Maeda Keiji can be rewarding, though it is best to check in advance whether such events are being held.
