History
As a Tendai-school temple that has kept its Dharma flame, Kichijoin bears the alternate name Gokoku-in, an origin echoed in its mountain name Shukokuzan (「Mountain that Guards the Nation」). Its principal image, the Thousand-armed Kannon, is revered as a bodhisattva who saves all beings with countless hands. As the third station of the Mogami Thirty-three Kannon, it continues to play a part in the region's pilgrimage culture.
Access
The temple is located in Yamagata City. As the prefectural capital, Yamagata is well served by rail and bus. Please check detailed routes, visiting hours, and whether goshuin seals are offered through official sources before your visit.
Best season
For enjoying the pilgrimage, spring through autumn, with less snow, are the easiest seasons for walking. The fresh greenery and autumn foliage deepen the atmosphere of the grounds. For the quiet time unique to a Kannon sanctuary, a weekday morning with fewer visitors is also recommended.
