History
Awashima Shrine is regarded as a candidate for a Shikinaisha and formerly held the shrine rank of gosha. It is positioned as the head shrine of the Awashima, Awashima and Awaji shrines found throughout Japan. The shrine's name is said to derive from Kami Island, and its hall follows the nagare-zukuri architectural style. Known for its memorial services for dolls, its precincts hold as many as twenty thousand dolls dedicated from around the country.
