Toyama is a city located from the central to southeastern part of Toyama Prefecture, and is the capital of the prefecture and its most populous city. Designated a core city, it is said to have the largest area among core cities. Its total area extends to about 1,241.74 square kilometres.

History

Toyama adopted the municipal system in 1889, and in 2005 it took on its present boundaries through mergers with surrounding municipalities. It has developed as the capital of Toyama Prefecture and is designated a core city. Its extensive area is said to be the largest among Japan's core cities.
