Overview

Uonomi-bashi is a bridge in Namerikawa City, Toyama Prefecture, spanning near the mouth of the Kamiichi River and carrying the major regional road linking Toyama and Uozu. Measuring 93 meters long, 7 meters wide, and 6.8 meters high, it is a historic road bridge built in 1937. Amid the estuary scenery close to Toyama Bay, it has quietly continued to support local traffic.

Highlights

  • A historic road bridge built in 1937, 93 meters long
  • A setting at the Kamiichi River mouth, where sea and river meet
  • A key link supporting the major Toyama-Uozu regional road
  • Views that, in the right conditions, reach the Tateyama range across Toyama Bay

History

Uonomi-bashi was built in 1937. Ever since, it has served as a practical bridge on part of the major regional road connecting Toyama and Uozu, carrying the flow of people and goods. Its dimensions of 93 meters long and 7 meters wide hint at the road-building standards of that era. Its position near the river mouth exposes it to floods and tides, and its long service to local transport lends it a quiet value as a piece of civil-engineering heritage.

Access

The bridge lies near 36.76 degrees north and 137.32 degrees east, close to the mouth of the Kamiichi River in Namerikawa City. It is convenient to go by car from Namerikawa Station on the Ainokaze Toyama Railway, crossing the bridge while traveling the Toyama-Uozu regional road. Combining a visit with a walk along the estuary or seashore works well. Take care with traffic if viewing on foot, and confirm current conditions via official information.

Best season

Because the estuary sits close to Toyama Bay, on clear days from autumn into winter the Tateyama mountain range may appear across the water, making the view over the bridge exceptional. Strolling in mild spring or in early summer when the river surface glitters is also pleasant, and the shifting waterside and mountain scenery through the seasons stirs the spirit of travel.

💡 The Kamiichi River that the bridge spans eventually flows into Toyama Bay. The bay is known for firefly squid and white shrimp, and Namerikawa in particular is famed as a town of firefly squid. The estuary scene at the foot of the bridge connects to the very waters of Toyama Bay that nurture such seafood.
