Overview
Otoko-iwa is a small island floating in the sea off the Amaharashi coast in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture. With an area of about 1,100 square meters and a circumference of roughly 150 meters, it is a modest rocky islet said to have earned the name Otoko-iwa, or Male Rock, from its bold, manly form as if standing firm against the rough waves. About 800 meters to the northwest lies its counterpart, Onna-iwa, and together they add a distinctive accent to the view of Toyama Bay from the Amaharashi shore. On clear days the Tateyama mountain range can be seen beyond the sea, making this rock part of a scene woven from stone, water, and mountains.

History
Otoko-iwa appears even in old records. The Etchū Shichō, written by Morita Kaen of the Kaga domain, quotes the Kyūseki Chōsho compiled in 1764 (Hōreki 14), noting that Otoko-iwa lay some five or six chō offshore from the Momijikawa river mouth beach in the Ōta village domain, and that the rock measured about thirty ken around. From this, it is thought the name Otoko-iwa was already in use before 1764. The Etchū Shichō also records the paired Onna-iwa, showing that these rocks have long been regarded as a feature of the Amaharashi seascape.
Access
The site lies off the coast of Amaharashi in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture. It is viewed out at sea from the Amaharashi area spread along the shore. Enjoying it from stations near the Amaharashi coast on the JR line, or from the coastal road, is the basic way to see it. Rather than crossing to the island itself, the pleasure lies in admiring it as scenery from the shore. Check official tourism information for the latest access and viewing tips before you go.
Best season
