History
The Jinzū was designated a Class A river on April 1, 1969. The custom of calling the upper course the Miya River and the lower course the Jinzū reflects how a single system has long linked the distinct regions of Hida and Etchū. In the past it served boat traffic and fishing, and as a water source it supported farming and daily life across the Toyama Plain. For detailed history and flood-control developments, please refer to official information.
Access
The lower course through central Toyama lies at roughly 36.76°N, 137.22°E. The riverside within the city is easily reached from stations such as Toyama Station, while the upstream gorges can also be approached from the Gifu side. Because the nearest stations and road conditions differ by section, check official sources for the place you plan to visit.
Best season
Autumn foliage in the upstream gorges is among the finest sights. The bright greenery of early summer and the powerful spring flow swelled by snowmelt are also striking. The riverside in central Toyama is pleasant for walks year-round, offering a different face in each season.
