Highlights

  • Former flatland castle site in Shinjo, Niikawa District, Etchu Province

  • Located roughly midway between Toyama and Mizuhashi

History

The castle was a flatland fortification (hirajiro) built along the Hokuriku Kaido highway, at a point roughly midway between Toyama and Mizuhashi. Roads are said to have branched from this location toward Higashi-Iwase to the north, Oiwa to the east, and Kamidaki and Sasazu to the south, marking it as a crossroads of regional routes.

Access

The former castle site lies within the grounds of Shinjo Elementary School in Shinjo-machi 1-chome, about 4 km east of central Toyama City. As the land is now used as a school, it is worth confirming in advance whether visiting is possible.

Best season

Since the site itself is on school grounds rather than an open historical park, it can be approached in any season, though spring and autumn are more comfortable for walking around the surrounding area.
