The Kurobe River is a Class A river flowing through the eastern part of Toyama Prefecture, about 86 kilometers long with a watershed of roughly 689 square kilometers, and it is the main stream of the Kurobe River system. History
Blessed with a steep gradient and abundant flow, the Kurobe River has long been known as ideal for hydroelectric power. Power development advanced in the rugged Kurobe Gorge, and the Kurobe Dam, one of the largest in Japan, was built upstream. The fierce current that cuts the gorge, together with the bounty of the mountains, has shaped the nature and life of this region.
Access
The river mouth faces the Sea of Japan, while a reference point in the upper reaches lies in the mountainous zone near latitude 36.40 north and longitude 137.60 east. To enjoy the gorge scenery, the Kurobe Gorge Railway trolley train from Unazuki Onsen is the classic option. The alluvial-fan side can be reached from Kurobe City and Nyuzen. Please check the official information on which sections are open for entry.
Best season
The fresh green of early summer and the autumn foliage, when the gorge glows in color, are especially worth seeing. Spring, when snowmelt swells the flow, is powerful too, and the valley changes its face with each season. Parts of the gorge close in winter, so advance confirmation is essential.
