History
The Ushiro-Tateyama range, where Mount Subari stands, is a main Northern Alps ridge facing the Tateyama range across the Kurobe River, long a stage for mountain worship and climbing. Designated part of Chubu-Sangaku National Park, its rich alpine environment is protected. Forming the border between Nagano and Toyama, this peak lies on a grand ridge-traverse route, and many climbers have crossed it midway through traverses from the direction of Harinoki Pass.
Access
The peak stands at 2,752 meters, near 36.54 degrees north and 137.69 degrees east. A well-known approach starts from Ogisawa on the Nagano side, climbs to Harinoki Pass, and follows the ridge northward. Because this is a serious high-alpine mountain, be sure to confirm access to the trailhead, the latest route conditions, and mountain-hut operations with official information in advance.
Best season
Summer, roughly July to September, when the remaining snow has settled and the ridge becomes easier to walk, is the climbing season. While you can enjoy alpine plants and sweeping views, the ridge above 2,700 meters demands caution against sudden weather changes and cold. Outside the snow-free season it is an advanced route with snow and ice, so prepare your gear and plans thoroughly.
