Overview

Mount Hobutsu (Hobutsu-san) is a 1,005-meter peak straddling the towns of Hino and Kofu in Tottori Prefecture. Counted among the 100 Famous Mountains of the Chugoku region and the notable mountains of Tottori, it has its western half designated as an ordinary zone and its eastern half as a special zone of Daisen-Oki National Park. With its shapely form and a satisfying but manageable climb, it is a beloved local mountain. From the summit, hikers can take in the majestic Mount Daisen and Miho Bay on the Sea of Japan, feeling the deep nature of the Chugoku Mountains all around.

Highlights

  • A 1,005-meter local summit ranked among the 100 Famous Mountains of Chugoku
  • Sweeping summit views of Mount Daisen and Miho Bay
  • Protected nature within Daisen-Oki National Park
  • A clear trailhead at the folklore museum near Nebu Station

History

The name Hobutsu, literally suggesting a link to Buddhist treasure and faith, hints at how long the mountain has been revered by local people. In March 2002 the surrounding area was incorporated into Daisen-Oki National Park, so today the peak can be enjoyed within a protected natural setting. Since being chosen among the 100 Famous Mountains of Chugoku and the notable mountains of Tottori, it has drawn hikers throughout the seasons. For detailed history, please check on-site guidance or official sources.

Access

The usual starting point is the local history and folklore museum located very close to JR Nebu Station at the foot of the mountain. From there, reaching the summit takes roughly two and a half to three hours of climbing. As the mountain spans both Hino and Kofu, it is wise to confirm the latest road and trail conditions in advance whether you come by public transport or car.

Best season

The fresh greenery of spring and early summer, and the clear-aired autumn when Mount Daisen stands out sharply, are especially rewarding. Because the peak rises to around 1,000 meters, winter brings snow and cold that demand proper preparation. Watch for sudden weather changes and plan a comfortable, unhurried climb.
