History

The mound is thought to have been built around the early 8th century, toward the end of the Kofun period. Raised in the Fukuba district as a circular tomb, it was equipped with a horizontal stone chamber for burial. Forming part of a cluster of tombs centered on the nearby Hahaki Shrine, it speaks to a landscape long shaped by human settlement and worship. Today it is protected as a Tottori Prefectural Historic Site.

Did you know?

💡 Some records describe the mound as circular, others as square, and this uncertainty over its true form remains an intriguing point of study. The coexistence of an ancient shrine, Hahaki Shrine, with a group of burial mounds in one setting hints at how closely worship and funerary practice were intertwined in early Japan.
