History
In the early 1630s the temple was founded at Kuritani by the monk Senden under the name Unkyozan Kannon-in, and around 1639 (Kan'ei 16) it moved to its present site and adopted its current name. Thereafter it flourished as one of the eight prayer temples of the Ikeda family, former lords of the Tottori domain (so designated in 1709), walking a path as a temple of high standing tied to the domain. Together with its garden, designated a Place of Scenic Beauty, it conveys the history of Tottori to this day.
Access
The temple lies around the Uemachi district of central Tottori, making it easy to reach from the heart of the city. Whether you come by public transport or car, it is best to confirm visiting hours and whether the garden is open through official sources before your visit. Its location makes it an easy stop to combine with other city sightseeing.
Best season
The garden is especially rewarding in spring and early summer, when fresh greenery is reflected in the pond, and in autumn when its colors turn. As a scenic garden that changes with each season, choosing your season adds to the pleasure. Take time to gaze at the garden in the quiet grounds.
