Overview

The Kitayama Kofun (also called Kitayama No. 1 Tumulus) is a keyhole-shaped burial mound in the Nohana and Nagawada areas of Yurihama, Tohaku District, Tottori Prefecture. One of the mounds making up the Kitayama Kofun cluster, it is the largest burial mound in Tottori Prefecture, a precious historic site of the San'in region that evokes the romance of antiquity.

History

It is a keyhole-shaped (zenpo-koen-fun) tumulus estimated to have been built in the first half of the 5th century, the middle of the Kofun period, and it was designated a National Historic Site of Japan in 1980. As the largest kofun in Tottori Prefecture, it conveys the region's ancient history to this day.
