Fish Specimens and Old Japanese Life Museum
A museum in Tottori — exhibits full of discovery.
Overview
The Fish Specimens and Old Japanese Life Museum stands in Hanamachi, Sakaiminato, Tottori Prefecture. Billed as “the aquarium with no water,” it is known for displaying not living fish but a large collection of taxidermied marine creatures. Powerful large specimens and a whale specimen make for exhibits you can experience nowhere else, immersing visitors in the sea-bound world of the port town of Sakaiminato. The building itself is a highlight: a Meiji-era former sake brewery, renovated into an atmospheric space that lends the displays a distinctive character.
Highlights

History
The museum building was originally a sake brewery built in the Meiji era. To give the disused brewery new life, renovation work ran from 13 February 1993 to 20 March 1994, and the museum opened on 19 April that year. The way the old brewery's frame was preserved as it was reborn into an “aquarium with no water” is a story unique to this place. The building is also listed among the “Top 100 Buildings Selected by Prefectural Citizens.”
