Overview

Koun-ji is a Soto Zen Buddhist temple tucked into the hills of Chizu, in Yazu District of Tottori Prefecture. Its mountain name is Ryugin-zan, and it stands along the old Chizu Kaido highway that runs through the former post town of Chizu-juku. As the 20th temple on the Inaba Thirty-Three Kannon pilgrimage circuit, it has long welcomed pilgrims, offering a quiet, tree-framed precinct that invites travelers to pause and reflect.

Highlights

  • A calm Soto Zen precinct wrapped in mountain quiet
  • Its role as the 20th temple of the Inaba Thirty-Three Kannon pilgrimage
  • A setting along the historic Chizu Kaido at Chizu-juku
  • The evocative mountain name Ryugin-zan and its valley scenery

History

Founded as a temple of the Soto Zen school, Koun-ji grew up beside the Chizu Kaido, a key travel route through the region. Counted as the 20th station of the Inaba Thirty-Three Kannon pilgrimage, it has been woven into the faith and daily life of local people as one stop on the Kannon devotional route. For details of its founding and principal image, please check on-site notices or official information.

Access

The temple lies in Chizu, Yazu District, Tottori Prefecture, along the historic Chizu Kaido highway. It is close to the townscape of Chizu-juku; travelers arriving by rail will find Chizu Station a convenient starting point. As the setting is a mountain valley, it is wise to confirm the route and parking availability through official sources beforehand.

Best season

The fresh greenery of early summer and the coloring hills of autumn set off the Zen temple grounds especially well. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons to combine a temple visit with a walk along the old highway, though the quiet Zen atmosphere can be savored year-round.

Did you know?

💡 The mountain name Ryugin-zan, evoking the sound of wind through the valley as the chant of a dragon, carries the understated grace typical of a Zen temple. Part of its charm lies in how the temple has walked alongside the highway culture of the Chizu-juku post town.
