History
Karasugasen is one of the peaks of the Daisen range shaped by volcanic activity, and its steep, pointed form is the product of natural processes over long ages. Long cherished, together with Mount Daisen, as a symbol of the nature of the Hōki and Hino districts, it is protected as one of the mountains making up the Daisen-Oki National Park. For details on climbing history and how the routes came to be, please refer to official mountaineering information.
Access
The mountain lies on the border between the towns of Kotoura (Tōhaku District) and Kōfu (Hino District) in Tottori Prefecture (its summit at roughly 35.36°N, 133.57°E). Trailheads around the Daisen area serve as starting points, and as public transport is limited, using a car or taxi is the practical choice. Access to the trailheads, parking, and trail conditions vary by season, so be sure to confirm official information before departure.
Best season
From the fresh greenery of early summer through the autumn, when the crisp air sharpens the mountain views, is the ideal climbing season. In winter, snow cover and severe cold greatly increase the difficulty, making it suitable only for climbers with the experience and equipment to match. In any season, watch for sudden changes in weather and set out with a reasonable plan.
