Overview

Shōsen-ji is a Jōdo-shū (Pure Land) Buddhist temple in Himonya, Meguro Ward, Tokyo. It carries on the teaching of the Pure Land school, whose founder Hōnen taught that anyone can be saved through the nenbutsu, the recitation of "Namu Amida Butsu." Standing in an area that preserves the old place name of Himonya, the temple has quietly marked a long history within a calm setting where houses and greenery mingle in comfortable measure.

History

Shōsen-ji is said to have been founded in 1572, in the closing years of the Warring States period. Over more than four centuries it appears to have passed through several changes; for details of its history and treasures, please consult official information.

Gakugei-daigaku and Toritsu-daigaku stations on the Tōkyū Tōyoko Line are relatively close, and you reach the temple by walking through the Himonya residential streets. As this is a leafy, tranquil neighborhood, pairing the visit with nearby Himonya Park makes for a pleasant outing. Check official sources for visiting hours and which areas of the precinct are open.
