Overview
Ameya-Yokocho, commonly shortened to Ameyoko, is an open-air market in the Ueno area of Taito Ward, Tokyo. It stretches roughly 500 to 600 meters along and beneath the elevated railway between Okachimachi and Ueno stations, packed with around 400 shops selling everything from food to clothing.

History
There are two theories about the market's name. One traces it to ameya (candy shops), which lined the street in the early post-war years when sugar was scarce. The other links it to America, referring to shops that sold surplus U.S. army goods just after World War II. Today it is simply known as Ameyoko.
