Overview

The Tokyo Anime Center is a facility created to share information about Japanese anime and to nurture talent in the industry. It hosts promotional displays for anime titles, talk events with creators and voice actors, and merchandising fairs, and has long been cherished by fans as a hub for encountering their favorite works. Over its history it has moved locations several times, and in recent years it has offered new experiences blending the real and virtual in the Shibuya area. As exhibits and opening status change from time to time, always confirm the details through official sources before visiting.

Highlights

  • Promotional displays and collaboration projects for popular titles
  • Talks and events featuring creators and voice actors
  • A merchandise corner lined with anime-related goods
  • New experiences that blend the real and the virtual

History

The center was originally located inside the Akihabara UDX building, where it became known as a hub for anime information. In 2007 it staged many talked-about projects, including life-size stand-ups and interactive demos for a hotly anticipated film. Its management and name changed over the years: after its Akihabara era it moved to DNP Plaza in the Ichigaya area of Shinjuku, and in 2021 to the second floor of Shibuya Modi as the Tokyo Anime Center in DNP PLAZA Shibuya. In 2024 it also opened its first overseas location in Japantown, San Francisco.

Access

In recent years the center has been located in Shibuya ward, Tokyo (coordinates about 35.662 degrees north, 139.701 degrees east). It sits in the commercial area around Shibuya Station, but because the facility has relocated from Akihabara to Ichigaya to Shibuya over time, always confirm the current address, nearest station, and admission details through official information before you set out.

Best season

As an indoor facility it can be enjoyed regardless of weather or season. Since special exhibitions and events change over time, it is best to visit when a display or collaboration you are keen on is running. Check the latest schedule through official sources.
