The Ueno Zoo is a Tokyo Metropolitan zoo located within Ueno Imperial Grant Park in Taitō, Tokyo. Commonly known simply as Ueno Zoo, it opened on 20 March 1882 and is Japan's oldest zoo. Covering about 14.3 hectares, its grounds are divided into an eastern and a western section.

History
The Ueno Zoo opened on 20 March 1882 as Japan's oldest zoo and is managed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. The Ueno Zoo Monorail, which once connected the eastern and western parts of the grounds, was suspended due to ageing infrastructure and later closed permanently. The zoo sits within Ueno Imperial Grant Park.
