Overview

Asakawa Bridge spans the Asa River as it flows through Hachioji, western Tokyo. It carries National Route 16 (which here overlaps Tokyo Metropolitan Road 166, the Mizuho–Akiruno–Hachioji Line), making it a key crossing on an arterial route that links the Hachioji city center with the Tama hills. The clear stream of the Asa River — part of the Tama River system — set against the mountain ridges beyond, offers a gentle, spacious view distinct from central Tokyo and characteristic of Hachioji.

Highlights

  • An arterial National Route 16 bridge over the clear Asa River of the Tama system
  • Views from the bridge toward the ridges of Takao and the Tama hills
  • A key crossing linking central Hachioji with its suburbs
  • Waterside scenery best enjoyed together with the riverside promenade

History

The Asa River rises in the Mount Takao range and flows through the city of Hachioji as a tributary of the Tama River. Asakawa Bridge, which crosses it, has long supported Hachioji's traffic as part of National Route 16, a great ring-road artery encircling the Tokyo metropolitan region. During Typhoon Hagibis in 2019 (the East Japan Typhoon of the Reiwa era), the Asa River swelled and had a major impact along its course. For details such as the year the bridge itself was built, please consult official information from the City of Hachioji.

Access

The bridge crosses the Asa River in Hachioji, Tokyo (around 35.67°N, 139.33°E). It can be reached by heading through the city center from JR Hachioji Station or the Keio Line stations, and it stands along National Route 16. Though it is primarily an arterial bridge for vehicles, some sections along the river have riverside promenades, so you can also cross on foot and feel the breeze off the water. Please confirm detailed access through official sources.

Best season

From early summer, when the Asa River's banks turn lush green, through autumn, when the riverside air grows crisp, is the best time for a waterside walk. On clear days the bridge offers a view of the ridges toward Takao, and the shimmer of the river at dusk is also a treat.
